On November 1 and 2, many Latin American countries celebrate Dí de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).  It is a day of remembrance for loved ones who have died, but it’s not a day of mourning.  Instead, people celebrate the lives of their deceased loved ones and pay respect to their memories.  One of the most popular parts of this celebration is an ofrenda (offering) which may include pictures of loved ones, their favorite foods or drinks, pan de muerto (bread of the dead), calaveras (sugar skulls), and flor de muerto (marigolds).  It is believed that the scent of the marigolds will guide the deceased to the land of the living, so they can share a meal.

Many cultures outside of Latin America have similar celebrations.  China celebrates Qingming, South Koreans celebrate the Chuseok, some Indians celebrate Pitru Paksha, and some people in the southeastern United States celebrate Decoration Day. Many other countries and cultures celebrate their own version of this holiday.

Celebrate Life with Día de Muertos (en ingles y español) https://www.kentonlibrary.org/blogs/post/celebrate-life-with-dia-de-muertos-en-ingles-y-espanol/ Fri, 06 Oct 2023 00:19:02 +0000 https://www.kentonlibrary.org/?p=23406 On November 1 and 2, Latin American countries celebrate the Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead).  It is true that the loss of a loved one is a sad and difficult time, but when people celebrate this holiday, they don’t look at it in a sad way, instead they celebrate the lives of the deceased.  The most recognizable part of this day is the “ofrenda” (offering) that is a collection of offerings dedicated to the person or people being honored.  This includes “pan de muerto” (bread of the dead), their favorite dishes and/or items, sugar skulls with their names written on them, “flor de muerto” (marigold flowers) and any other thing that reminds them of the honoree.  It is believed that the scent of the marigolds will guide the deceased to the land of the living, so they can share a meal.   Families play games, reminisce about special moments, and may even hire a “mariachi” to play the favorite songs of their loved ones.

Latin American culture is not the only one that celebrates this holiday. It may not have the same name or be on the same date, but it has the same purpose.  Buddhists celebrate the Obon Festival, South Koreans celebrate the Chuseok, Nepalese people celebrate the Gai Jatra, and Cambodians celebrate the Pchum Ben. Many other countries and cultures celebrate their own version of this holiday.
