The Covington Branch of the Kenton County Public Library houses one of the largest Kentucky history collections in the state of Kentucky. It’s a great place to learn more about Kentucky women during Women’s History Month.

Kentucky women in history help round out the collection. Loretta Lynn, Catherine Conner, Margaret Garner, Manar Shalash, Jane Coomes and so many more women are featured in books.

Lifelong Educator Shawna Harney Honored with Mary Ann Mongan Literacy Award

Villa Hills, KY — Shawna Harney, Chief Academic Officer for the Kenton County School District, was presented with the Mary Ann Mongan Literacy Award today in recognition of her exceptional contributions to literacy and educational excellence in Kenton County. The award ceremony highlighted Harney’s 27 years of dedicated service to the district and her unwavering commitment to improving student outcomes.

The Mary Ann Mongan Literacy Award, established in 2009, honors individuals who have demonstrated outstanding dedication to literacy in Kenton County. Named after Mary Ann Mongan, the first Executive Director of the Kenton County Public Library, this award celebrates the legacy of her work in education and literacy. Harney’s leadership in driving literacy initiatives, including the implementation of the Read to Succeed Act and the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS), aligns perfectly with the values Mongan instilled in the community.

“I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this award than Shawna,” said Dave Schroeder, Executive Director of the Kenton County Public Library. “Her tireless work has transformed the educational landscape in Kenton County. Shawna’s commitment to student literacy, safety, and overall academic excellence has made a profound impact on the lives of countless children, educators, and families. She embodies the spirit of the Mary Ann Mongan Literacy Award and continues to inspire us all.”

Under Harney’s leadership, the Kenton County School District has seen significant growth in student literacy, particularly with the district’s implementation of Kentucky’s Read to Succeed Act, which aims to ensure students are reading on grade level. She has also spearheaded initiatives to improve special education services and behavioral support, as well as foster professional development opportunities for educators throughout the district.

Harney’s leadership has been instrumental in the development of MTSS, a framework that addresses the diverse academic and behavioral needs of students, ensuring that all students receive the individualized support they need to succeed. In addition, her work with the district’s Community-Based Accountability System has brought together educators, students, parents, and community members to collaboratively assess student progress and improve educational outcomes.

Check out Kenton County Library for BLINK and spooky season activities

Starting Thursday, Oct. 17, you can check out the Covington branch to see a BLINK installation lit up outside. It's called Loophole and is coming all the way from Spain. The artwork is colorfully lit up and emulates the northern lights. The library is giving out free light-up foam wands while supplies last.

The library is celebrating Halloween and family history month with its Kentucky Haunts, Murder, and Mayhem series. You can check out local spooky books and e-books from the library.

Kenton Co. Public Library celebrating National Library Card Sign-Up Month

Help us break our record for the most library cards given in one day! Visit any branch of the Kenton County Public Library on September 14 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. to get your free card. Bring a piece of mail or your ID with your current address to any location. Children need their guardian's signature.

You will need your library card for our event at Strike & Spare Erlanger on Sept. 16 from 4 to 9 p.m. Everyone who shows their card can bowl, skate, and play for free!

Perk up! It’s Saturday Storytime at The Point Perk Coffee Shop in Covington
